Gilbert Powers

Introduction

Gilbert Powers worked as an avionic technician for 23 years and is currently the Airport support network representative for AOPA at 9K4 Skyhaven Airport in Warrensburg, Missouri. Gilbert is the county clerk, election authority, and public information officer for Johnson County Missouri. Gilbert served his country in the Army National Guard, retiring after 25 years from an aviation battalion. Gilbert pilots a Beech Bonanza F33A, N4503S. He is a patriot and general aviation enthusiast. His wife Jane, a licensed pilot herself, will be his co-pilot for this mission.

Gilbert Powers is quoted as saying: “I didn’t personally know any of the people who lost their lives in the attack of September 11th, but I grieve for them just the same. They are our brothers and sisters in this horrific event. Although the victim’s names may not be on the tips of our tongues, their loss will forever be on our minds and weigh upon our hearts.

The attack of September 11th was not only an attack on people and property, but also on our freedom. But, Freedom is not so easily destroyed. Once you have experienced freedom it becomes a part of you. To fly is to experience the ultimate freedom. The freedom of flying is a part of our American heritage and an intricate part of our open society, a symbol of an American people without bounds, an expression of our will to be free people, and it was used against us. And now, just as the people of New York haven taken back their city, I believe it is time for us as a nation to take back our freedom. We can start by visually confirming to the people of New York City and the world that aviation is not the enemy, and that freedom can soar even in the face of adversity. Flight Across America serves this goal well as a tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th, and as a celebration of our nation’s freedom. This is a worthwhile project and a part of our healing process. That is why I and my wife Jane are taking part in this event, and why it gives me great pride to be the flag bearer for the people of the show-me-state, the great State of Missouri.”
