IntroductionI have been flying since 1983. On my birthday I went in and told my wife, Betty, that I had bought myself a birthday present – a plane. After she revived she agreed that sounded “interesting” provided that I learned to fly it. In a few days I was soloing and she decided to go to ground school with me. A few weeks later I had my license and was off on a fun hobby that has taken us all over the continent. Besides winter trips to southern Florida; we have flown twice to Alaska and to Newfoundland, where we joined a humpback whale research group. Three years ago I started flying for Angel Flight Central and Lifeline Pilots. We volunteer pilots get great satisfaction out of flying people in need for medical treatment. I have made many lasting friendships with patients. One little guy sends e-mails to keep me informed of his progress. He wasn’t able to get around on his badly burned feet, and now he’s playing Little League because Angel Flight enabled his getting treatment. Betty and I also volunteer for many other charitable groups and community and statewide projects. I was an industrial contractor and retired in 1995. Now we have more time to actively participate in our community. We are purchasing American Flags to take along on the Flight Across America. When we return from New York those flags will be presented to the Fire and Police Departments, the Museum’s 9-11 exhibit and to family and friends. We’re having plaques made to accompanying the flags, stating that they were carried on the flight in memory and commemoration of 911. Lee Mook, Indiana Flag Bearer |
