Hawaii Flag Bearers
Maria Schwartz and Norman Schwartz
IntroductionMy piloting adventures include a flight from Los Angeles to Paris and an air safari through the plains of southern Africa in a Cessna 210. Circling the globe in 1993 and a trip to the North Pole in 1997 were in my present aircraft, a Cessna 340. My daughter-in-law, Maria Lippi Schwartz, the flag bearer for Hawaii, will accompany me on this historic flight. She grew up on the island of Oahu and is a Punahou grad. She taught dyslexic and gifted children prior to her marriage to my son. They and their four children live in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina where he is a physician engaged in research and development of robotic surgical devices designed for space travel of the future. Maria’s parents received the Hawaiian state flag in ceremonies aboard the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. It was presented to them by a brigadier general representing the governor. From there the flag will be hand-carried by a captain of an American Airlines flight to me in Los Angeles where I now reside. My itinerary to New York will be ABQ, PWA, BNA and RDU. I have flown into New York many times. The view without the World Trade Center as it was while a youth growing up in the Big Apple, will be tinged with sadness. These twin towers at the lower end of Manhattan balanced the island and added a sense of harmony to the majestic skyline unrivaled anywhere else in the world. |
